Technische Universität München - Bauinformatik

The Lehrstuhl für Computation in Engineering comes out of the former Fachgebiet für Elektronisches Rechnen im Konstruktiven Ingenieurbau, which was founded in 1971 and headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Heinrich Werner until 1997. Since then, it is continuing teaching and research in computer science in civil engineering under Prof. Dr. Ernst Rank.

During the past 25 years, information, communication and simulation technology has become one of the foundations of modern civil engineering. As a consequence, most German universities have established Bauinformatik as a regular subject, being reponsible for the common aspects of computer science across the classical disciplines of civil engineering as well as for exploring new possibilities to take advantage of computer related techniques for the solution of engineering problems.

Already today, the work of every civil engineer is influenced directly or indirectly by computer sciences. This influence will even increase in future, as economic and ecological requirements need answers using innovative constructions and new materials, making extensive and detailed numerical computations mandatory. Moreover, in the course of globalization, civil engineering will depend more and more on fast and efficient exchange of information, on the availability of a computer supported co-laborative working environment and on the integration of diverse data models and software tools for all phases of design, construction and operation of civil engineering systems.

The Lehrstuhl für Computation in Engineering considers it as its primary task to prepare students for their work as civil engineers in a global information society and to continue research in a vivid and rapidly developing field of engineering sciences.
